ABOVE IT ALL - Are the Blue Ridge Mountains that skyline North Georgia. From here, high above the Atlanta piedmont, lies a thirty-two acre scenic mountaintop property adjoining U.S. National Forest with an authentic hand-hewn stone and timber cottage commanding hundreds of square miles of Georgia vistas to the south.
Views of spectacular dimension - ocean waves of mountains nearby to the distant low plains of the south sprawl beneath. At 2440' above sea level this property tops the main line of the Blue Ridge Mountains - from the pinnacle here looking south everything is below you and the view is unobstructed as far as the atmosphere will allow. On the far horizon rise the buildings of Atlanta and the granite projection of Stone Mountain. To the southwest lift the wavy ascents of hills and crests of the Burnt Mountain range. The views spill for miles and miles; at night the twinkling lights on the distant horizon are like little stars across a dark ocean. In the daylight the terrain falls away to convey a sense of openness one would get from atop an island mountain looking out to sea.
The Allen Cottage on the property was constructed from
stone collected here, painstakingly selected and tightly placed by hand to form sturdy stone walls. The framing inside is thick timber beams with a rough sawn planked-wood interior to match the design. A massive open stone fireplace sprawls across the greatroom and quaint wood stoves offer an alternative warm source of heat. A tall cathedral ceiling opens up the greatroom area with a glassed wall and allows the views to spill into the room. There are two bedrooms and one bath; a balustrade ladder leads up to a twin-roomed loft above. If you study a bit you'll appreciate the thought and craftsmanship that went into the design of the cottage - all planned out ahead of time and meticulously implemented with care. A hand designed, hand fitted, and handcrafted work of art.
The land is comprised of scenic timber woodlands and pretty Appalachian understory and adjoins the U.S. National Forest on the south side. A spring forms in a gentle cove and begins to flow, gathering volume quickly to tumble down the mountainside first in little cascades then waterfalling over the native granite in a noisy deluge. A walking/riding trail circumnavigates the property; from the cottage you can meander down into the cove then around to the waterfall. From here you can sit, see, and hear the crystalline waters pour over the edge; all along the views peek out between the trees and offer southern vistas. The southern slope of the property adjacent to the cottage is cleared and terraced; excellent for cultivation of any type of plant or shrub that loves the sun.
Here the elevation offers summers that are several degrees cooler than Atlanta. Nearby is Amicalola Falls State Park and the beginning of the Appalachian Trail; Dahlonega and the North Georgia Outlet Mall are within a leisurely drive. Access to the property is via groomed gravel roadways and underground utilities serve the cottage. This rare combination of factors - the unparalleled views, a beautiful setting, flowing waters, winsome and warm cottage, open terrain and wooded forestland, all combine to offer something you can feel when you are there, something good for the soul.
